2023 - Another Year of Helping Families in Haiti!

Dear HH4HC

2023 was a successful year for Haitian Homes for Haitian Children. Our goal is for the students in our program to work towards success in school - with tutoring, English classes, a wonderful Summer School and a plan for their future endeavors.

We currently have 131 students from preschool through post-secondary education or vocational training, and through your donations and prayers, they and their families are experiencing a better quality of life. This year marked a huge milestone for HH4HC - our first graduate from a 4-year degree program, Fabiola Fontage, who received a degree from nursing school. We look forward to more students moving through post graduate studies, to the career of their choice.

We achieved a Platinum rating with Guidestar-Candid, an information service that provides information about nonprofit organizations to the public, and which we proudly display. We updated our website to introduce our organization and keep you updated on the latest activities, so if you haven’t seen it, take a look at HH4HC.org .

Unfortunately, we are not able to travel to Haiti at the present time, due to the U.S. Level 4 travel advisory, and we have worked to find creative ways to work remotely.

Our partnership with Agape Flights provided transportation for personal care items for our students and medications that we would have taken to Haiti on our trips.

We have established conference calls with our Haitian staff, to meet with them on a regular basis. A phone call may sound simple, but the internet and data communication in Haiti can be unreliable, so we are grateful when we can successfully conduct these meetings. We have wonderful Haitian staff members, who work so hard on behalf of our families, and we are grateful for them.

Thanks to all our donors, our “Feed their Future” 2023 fundraiser that provided an extra food allowance for the families was a huge success. Having just completed our “Blessing Basket” fundraising campaign, results will be forthcoming. We appreciate our sponsors and donors who faithfully support HH4HC throughout the year.

Our Founder, Jane’s Retirement

It is with deep gratitude that we announce the retirement of our founder, Jane Carney. While Jane will not be an active member of the Board of Directors, she will be Founder Emeritus, consulting with the Board. Words cannot express our most sincere thanks for Jane’s vision of helping families in Jeremie, Haiti, to prevent child abandonment, through support for education at Christian schools,
health care and nutrition. Since 2012, through Jane’s hard work and many trips to Haiti, Haitian Homes For Haitian Children has grown from 7 children to 131 students.

Please join the Board in thanking Jane for her years of dedicated service, her love for Haiti, and for paving the way to better lives for our families in Jeremie.

Blessing Baskets Campaign

Partnership with Agape Flights

We are excited to announce our partnership with Agape Flights. Agape Flights is a non-profit Christian aviation ministry serving missionaries in Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas, providing mail service and cargo service the missionaries need. Our first cargo to Jeremie includes the personal care items for the families and over the counter medicine for Joane, our nurse.

We are grateful to Agape for partnering with HH4HC, especially in these times that visits to Jeremie by our board are not possible. Thanks be to God for these hard-working people! Please keep Agape Flights in your prayers for safe travels.

Dear sponsors, donors and friends,

Giving Tuesday is November 28 th , and it kicks off “Blessing Baskets” as our last 2023 Fundraising Campaign. This year, we will focus on food items for our families in Haiti and personal care items for each student. The food will include rice, beans, spaghetti, oil, sugar, and corn meal. The personal care items will be age appropriate and include combs, toothbrushes, washcloths, etc.

According to a 2023 United Nations report, nearly half of Haiti’s population experience acute food insecurity. We know good nutrition has a positive impact on a student’s ability to learn. Staying healthy and avoiding illness through cleanliness, are important as well. Our staff will purchase the food locally in Jeremie, and we will purchase the personal care items here in the U.S. and ship them to Haiti. Our goal is to raise $7500, which will cover the food boxes for each family and the personal care kits for each student.

School has begun in Jeremie! Our students started back to school in September, which is always exciting, as circumstances sometimes delay school opening. Our staff in Haiti works diligently to get the students enrolled in school, ensures their uniforms are ready (uniforms are handmade) and purchases their books and supplies for the school year.

Our students from preschool to high school attend parochial schools in the Jeremie area. HH4HC also provides tutoring as needed. Our postgraduates attend universities or technical schools to further their education. All of these educational opportunities help our students achieve a better life in Haiti, and you are helping through your sponsorships and donations. Please join us in prayer for our students and their teachers and administrators to have a successful school year.

Vita Mamba – Nutritional Supplement for Students

Because nutrition is an important part of both the physical development and educational support of our students, we provide a supplement called Vita Mamba. Vita Mamba is a peanut based chewable snack that is fortified with vitamins and minerals. It helps prevent malnutrition. It’s made in Haiti with peanuts grown there. This helps our children and the community where the product is produced. Because the factory is located in Cap Haitien, which is in the northernmost part of Haiti, it is our responsibility to get it from there to Jeremie. Our board members, Prisma Estima and Rosena Desinor, arrange for drivers to receive our order of Vita Mamba in Cap Haitien and deliver it to Jeremie, which is more than a 12 hour trip.

We are grateful for everyone who helps us procure this supplement and for God’s protection over the drivers who bring it to Jeremie.

I want you to know that your Board of Directors and Haitian staff devote their time and effort on behalf of our students and their families in Jeremie. There is a great deal of amazing work going on for HH4HC, and we look forward to a great school year 2023-24!

A couple of weeks ago, one of our Board Members, Gerard “Jimmy” Paraison and I had the opportunity to spend the afternoon on the phone with each of our Haitian staff members, including our Finance Director, our Education Director, our Nurse, and the leaders of our Tutoring staff. Jimmy translated, when necessary, we received an update from each person about their work for HH4HC, and shared information with them. It was wonderful to hear their voices. I told them that both the Board and many of our supporters, including our churches, are praying for them. Our Staff responded that they ask the families in Jeremie to pray for us, too. I felt an overwhelming feeling of
connection with them, along with gratitude for their prayers.

This is the spirit of Haiti – faith, hope and love. I wish it for the dear people of Haiti, and I wish it for each of you.

This is a special edition of the Haitian Homes For Haitian Children Newsletter. Our founder, Jane Carney, wrote this article recently, and it is a testimony to her years of work in Haiti, and how our organization has grown and flourished through the years. As your Executive Director, I want to thank Jane and all of our board members, past and present, all the sponsors, donors, and partners, including churches, businesses and individuals, who have supported HH4HC along the way. Most of all, thank you for your prayers for the dear people of Haiti, and for God to guide us in our efforts to “Help Haiti, one family at a time.”

Why I don't Give Up on Haiti | Jane Carney

The past few months have been extraordinarily tough for our friends in Haiti. The violence and lack of leadership have been compounded by acts of nature, including drought followed by torrential rain and then an earthquake. My friends have summed it up when they say, “The Haitians just don’t seem to get a break.” and then it is easy to ask the age-old question “Where is God in all of this?”

The answer that I focus on is “He is right in the middle of it.” Many times, I must remember that God ALWAYS hears our prayers and that He promises his presence as we go through it. Most of the Haitians that I know have a better understanding of this than we Americans do. They do not believe that they have a right to wealth and success. They do not believe that they are entitled to these things. They simply accept life as it is, pick up the pieces and go on. When an earthquake occurs, they move their bedding to the street, so they are not hit by the falling cement blocks that their houses are made of. They don’t have a government that they can depend upon to send relief or solve their problems. Instead, they know they have a God that they can rely on, and you will find the churches full. The music that rises out of them is usually hymns of praise.

I don’t give up on the situation in Haiti because the Haitians themselves are spiritual role models for me. I have learned about resilience in tough times from them. I have learned not to lean back and wait for others to provide relief. I have learned the value of education by watching children wade barefoot through puddles holding their shoes in the air to attend school. I have seen women who are pregnant with their 8th or 9th babies value the lives of each child. They see each child as a gift from God. They will themselves go without food, clothing, and beds to provide for their children. The quality of humility is evident in their lives.

And so, I continue to pray for our children and their families in Haiti and I thank God for giving me a ministry from which I have experienced more love and grace than I have ever given.

We are very grateful to Monroe First Baptist Church for sponsoring our Summer School. We are also grateful to our partner school in Jeremie, Christ Roi, where we hold Summer School.

Our students have classes, along with daily Bible study, music and 2 meals a day, thanks to Mrs. Racine, our cook.

The special activities include classes on health, led by our nurse Ms. Joane, and our high school graduates will share their areas of study and encourage the students to work hard. Fabiola Fontage, our nursing school graduate, will share her experiences, and members of the Jeremie community will talk about their career fields, too!

Along with these academics, the students have recreation time, which they love, even though the weather is hot! Haitian children love soccer, basketball, jumping rope and being together.
